ECHORR Challenge 2010 – Weekend Report

It all started on Thursday evening, we gained early access to the hall and with the help of the KC boys,
Dave Lockwood, Henry Harnish, Jerry Boswell and other early arrivals, we were able to clear the floor
of chairs and tables and set up 3 tracks and stage 2 others. Tired, we went to sleep to be back at 7 AM,
all went well in the morning and all eight tracks were up and running at 11:30 AM. We have two new
showcase tracks in ECHORR, one from Maxx and one from TKO. Paul Kniffen and Mark Webster did
outstanding jobs on setting up these tracks and tables, nothing but compliments and offers to buy
them all weekend. Thanks to Dave Chandler of Maxx and Todd Kaufman of TKO for supporting ECHORR,
racers these are the guys to contact when you are ready to step up to a new track!!  Doors officially
opened at noon and racers started arriving form all over the country from noon on. All teams were
busy exchanging greetings and testing, tweaking and getting ready to tech in 15 team cars by 5:30 PM,
no easy task!

We had a meeting at 5:30 PM sharp to explain tech, procedures etc. With 255 cars to tech in, it was the
responsibility of the team captains to make sure their cars were legal for the event. It was a light pre-tech,
but I told them I would break down one car from each team during their bye round, which I did! By
7:00PM all cars were checked, marked and impounded, the rest of the evening was spent on picking
Nostalgia and INDY cars for Sunday’s Individual events.

We were in the Hall at 7:30 AM and several local vendors started arriving with their wares to sell at the
event, again many collectables being sold here to racers! This year we set a time limit of 35 minutes per
round and used a timer to keep things going, this worked out well, we also have new improved score
sheets, which helped a lot. We started the clock and off we went, there were several new teams and some
re-vamped teams in the house. Great close racing with only a couple of glitches all day. All minor repairs
to cars were supervised at the stage and there were no problems here either.  I want to thank the
Gamber Fire Hall for providing lunch on the premises, which saved us a lot of time. The ladies were
awesome and we look forward to working with them again.
All teams stayed on schedule and two races had to be run over, but those were done during final tech,
so they did not really prolong the event. The two favorites meet early in this event in round four, with
ZoominMotorsports beating Team KC-Jet by 4 points, but it was far from over as Team DCM was
putting on a strong showing and remained undefeated till the end of the day, Buckeye Thunder and
the Jersey Longhorns remained in the mix for much of the day also. It was a great day of team racing.
I tore down one car during the bye round of each team, all cars passed my tech,
J. I want to thank
Myron Benner, Brian Kaplun and Kevin Browning for helping with the final tech. All of team Zoomin’s
cars passed without a hitch.

Congratulations to all the teams and especially ZoominMotorsports for their much-deserved win and in
knocking off KC, who has only lost one race at this event in 7 years!
Kudos to Paul Kniffen, who spent much of the last three weeks in the doghouse at home because he
was getting the tracks ready for this event, Paul did not have much time to work on his product line or
cars, but being so unselfish, I am really glad his team won this event. Thanks to Paul’s Cheryl for
helping out with the T-shirt vending and for making sure the race director had chocolate cake and
brownies at all times. I am also very happy for Henry Harnish who is a National Champ again, 48 years
later! Awesome!!! There was some great driving by the rest of the Zoomin Team: Don Bourne, Travis Joop,
Tom Shepperd and Ken Ott, hats off to all of them.

The team event went well; we went to get our whistles wet and get ready for Sunday morning and the
Individual titles.

Sunday morning was upon us, we voted on the tracks for the individual races: Yellow Maxx track for
INDY cars, Diamond Plate TKO for Nostalgia Class and the IROC was run on the Orange Maxx track.

65 racers stayed around on Sunday and some stayed just to help with the event. Special thanks to
Joe Rinn, Brian Kaplun and Russ Upton, who did not race on Sunday, but helped run the Individual
events.
41 racers signed up for the Nostalgia class and 24 for the INDY class. We ran 2 minute qualifiers to
decide the final sixteen for INDY and the final twelve for Nostalgia. Participants that did not make the
finals for either class were allowed to participate in the IROC race. The IROC cars were basically
stock t-jets with slip on tires under slammed 55 Chevy bodies, prepped by Paul Kniffen. Let me
tell you these cars are a hoot to drive and it was evident from all the giggles during the IROC race.

Hall back to normal. We had a 50/50 to help the club and Joe Rinn won the prize and donated it back
to ECHORR, thanks Joe!! The $$ was turned over to the new Club Treasurer, Derek Wright. Thanks to
all that helped!
