ECHORR Race at Morgantown PA Toy and Slot Car Show

This was a first show for Rick “Resin Dude”, and what a show it was. Sold out room and spilled
 out to the
hallways. 72 + Tables sold and a great mix of vendors and lots of walk in traffic. A huge success!!

ECHORR held a race and it was an awesome one. 28 participants (Again who said racing and
collecting do not mix?) Close racing on the 4 by 12 Red Maxx Track. The results are as follows:

December 5, 2010

Happy Holidays from Northern New Jersey!!
Henry’s Third Annual Holiday Blast is in the books. This event featured
FIVE races with 4 different winners. Now, that’s some kind of racing.
Thanks to all our sponsors who were definitely in the holiday spirit with
tons of door prizes! Please support them whenever you can.
Twenty seven racers from all over the Northeast made the trek. There
were a new faces and after almost a year since his accident Brian Bright
was back on the track. The beauty of Randolph Raceway complex is there
five tracks and classes can be run simultaneously. The racers were split into
two groups. First, one group ran Nostalgia on the tub and the other ran IROC
on Schoolhouse, then switched. Pizza arrived and after lunch, one group ran
Indys on Garden State Doval and the other Super Stocks on Randolph raceway.
Then raced our remaining event before
the Vibe IROC race.
Although not a sanctioned ECHORR class, I will lead with the results of the
last event, the IROC vibrator race. This race featured 4 Aurora vibrator chassis
prepared by the 1962 Aurora Champ himself, with Paul Kniffen Indy hubs and
Resin Dude modified dirt racer bodies. As the hour was late and some folks had
a long drive home, 15 racers participated and there were plenty of smiles and
laughter racing these beauties. Only 1 lap separated the four ribbon winners.
This race was one minute heats total laps and sections deciding the results.
This race was run on a TKO replica of the Mille Miglia that was used in 1962.
Yes, there were comments of sacrilege “racing vibes on a routed track.”

As long as we’re discussing IROC, the second IROC event featured 4 Dash
Motorsports 55 Chevies prepared by Paul Kniffen similar to Nostalgia rules
and width. Everyone enjoyed driving these, including die hard blue oval guys
like Henry and myself. Heats were 2 minutes long and run on the Schoolhouse
Road Wizzard track. But there was a new “kink” in it since it was last run in
Hillsborough a couple of years ago. I can’t count the number of times I heard
“I hate that kink” spoken through the day. Maybe as many times as Henry ran
on The Garden State Doval. Again, close racing with a tie for 4th and one section
separating second and third.

Nostalgia is up next, 2 minute heats on the classic Aurora tub track. If you
don’t know about this type of track, look it up on Google. It is a great track
design and it is a challenge. This is still sectional track, mostly Aurora lock ‘n
joiner. Again, minute heats and close racing ALL for ribbon winners on the
same lap!

Two minute Indy heats were run on the6 lane 16 foot tri-oval TKO track.
Don’t make a mistake or get caught up in the wrecks on this track.
Their penalties are severe! I did notice that everyone in my heat backed
off the first turn after I said “I bet I can take everyone out in the first turn.”
My lead was short lived and gone by turn 2.

Hi Everyone,
It was another great slot car show in Parsippany, NJ to kick off the holiday
season. Thanksgiving is only 4 days away and the Christmas rush truly begins.
As always, a lot of cool stuff on display and bargains galore.
This show was so special that The Daily Record sent a photographer and reporter
to cover the event. Unfortunately, the racing didn’t get started until after they left.
But check out the photo gallery.
But this is about the ECHORR race on the new 5’ X 16’ yellow MaxTrax. This race
was for ECHORR super stock class. Twelve racers raced 3 minute heats. As always
the racing was close. The winner was determined by track sections. Ribbons were
presented for the top 4.

2 – Dave Lockwood – 107.07
3 – Don Auriema – 106.16

Gentlemen,

This year's ECHORR Veterans Day Race was an awesome event and Jeff Crosley's
"Celliar de Circuit" raceway is one of the premier raceways in the central Jersey area.
The fun started Saturday with practice from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm, guys even showed up
early to get that advantage against the others because Crosley's EQUALIZER TKO track
is one you have to get used to & have your car set-up on the mark. After the practice
session a group of racers headed over to JoJo's Tavern for bar pies, chili, sandwiches,
salads & lots of laughs. Sunday morning the doors opened at 8:00 am and the racers got
there pretty quick trying to get things together for the day's races. We started with ECHORR
Super Stocks on the Equalizer & the racing was fast and close. A round robin was followed
by a final four shoot-out for some of the best racing action & once the silicone dust settled,
it ended this way:

Hiram            92 laps

The pizza from mario's showed up just as the shoot-out was ending & it was great.
The racers had another short practice session, it was time to turn in your Indy cars.
The Max Trax was on fire & Anthony Z lit it up better than anyone that day.

September 19, 2010

Hi Everyone,

It was a beautiful day in Hillsborough, NJ, “the white crown gear capital of
the world,” for some T-jet racing. The clubhouse doors opened and I enjoyed
a nice cup of coffee waiting for the track to arrive. Twenty racers from 6 states
pitched in and go the track up and running in record time. THANKS to everyone
who helped. And I do mean everyone, hauling the 16’ grey TKO track from Henry’s
motor home, connecting the tables and getting the computer up, setting up the pits,
hanging the banners and all the other details necessary for a successful event.
The day’s classes were ECHORR Super Stocks and Indys. Three minute round robin
heats with laps and sections determining the winners in each class. Ribbons were
given for the top four in each event. Ribbons provided by Hiram. The scores in both
events were combined to determine the top three who would walk away with plaques.
Super Stock results

Dave Schiappa -80.32
Tim Duggins - 72.47
Pizza arrived just as the last heat was over, which gave the racers time to recharge
and the scorer to tally the results. Then a little practice for Indys and we got started
around 1:30. The new Boneshaker Indy body was very popular and there were some
really cool paint schemes. I really enjoyed Anthony’s purple and white one roaring
towards me on the front straight.

Indy Results

Ray Kurtz – 66.10
Joerinn – 64.36
John Gero – 63.09

Now it was time to combine the scores. It was easy determining the top 3 but
combining scores is tricky when there are only 60 sections. So, any sections total
over sixty counted as a full lap.

Congratulations to all the winners!!!!!!!!!!! And thanks to everyone for making this
event a SUCCESS.
Most racers left before the awards ceremony. For the curious the picture on the
plaque was Bob Hardin’s “First Turn Frenzy”   http://www.slotcarthrillart.com/thrillart.htm
Make a note that next year’s event may be moved up a week to the week after
Henry’s to accommodate some out of town racers. Check www.echorr.com for details.

Henry’s 6th Annual Blast was exactly that… A BLAST!!!
Thirty two racers from nine states, including 8 first timers, turned out for this event
including Rick Phillis from Ferndale, CA and the Bournes from Kansas City, Mo.
Racers began entering the Randolph Raceway complex around noon on Saturday
for some testing and tuning. Before you knew it there were 20 racers hitting the
tracks. Paul Kniffen, Zoomin’ Motorsports, Hiram Durant and Dave Vickers (VRP)
set up their wares and were quickly surrounded with racers eager to see what was
available. Things broke up for a nice Italian dinner at Rosie’s a great local spot.
Early breakfast at the local diner and racers were waiting for the doors to open.
Some more open track time and practice before the racing began.
Racers were split into 2 groups. One group ran Super Stocks on the famed Brad
Bowman Randolph Raceway, while the second group ran Nostalgia class on an
original Aurora tub track. The race format was 3 minute round robin heats with
total laps and sections determining the winner for each class.
New York style pizza arrived just as the groups finished. Nice timing Henry.
After a quick lunch, the groups changed tracks and were randomly placed in the heat.
As usual, there was a lot of close racing but many more laughs.
Thanks to all the sponsors as there were plenty of race prizes.

August 28, 2010

Some competitive and very entertaining racing convened this nice August day at Woodhaven
Hills Raceway. Round robin 3 minute heat racing took place in the following classes:

ECHORR SS
INDY SS IROC (new spin on ECHORR INDY)
LAWYERS' CLASS

Derek Sheaffer took 1st place in ECHORR SS and INDY SS.
Jeff Crosley took first place in the Lawyers' Class, fittingly in a stolen car.

Here are the results:

ECHORR SS

1. Derek Sheaffer
2. Hiram Durant
3. Steve The Lawyer
4. Don Auriema

INDY SS IROC

1. Derek Sheaffer
2. Don Auriema
3. Hiram Durant
4. Victor Quinones

The INDY SS chassis were donated by Hiram Durant. They were tjet chassis and gears with JL
magnets and brand new Zoomin' Motorsports Indy bodies. The unique spin on the chassis were
tuff ones' wheels and tires on all four corners, which made for some realistic looking and
challenging handling cars. There were great pileups while the racers got used to the interesting
handling characteristics of the cars, and everyone ended the race with a big smile and big appetite.

LAWYERS' CLASS

1. Jeff Crosley
2. Hiram Durant
3. Don Auriema
4. Victor Quinones

LAWYERS' CLASS cars are tjet/AFX/Magnatract ion chassis with any pancake arm (rewinds, quad lams,
custom winds, etc.), any wheels/tires, magnets, traction magnets, etc. Basically, there are no rules. Run
what you bring and drive it like you stole it. There is plenty of cheating
(AND IT'S ALL LEGAL AND ENCOURAGED). Crosley claimed that he couldn't find a car to run so he stole the
host's car and ran it to victory. But, since there are no rules, his win stands. Hiram did check Crosley's pockets,
pit box and underwear and confirmed that he didn't pilfer the chassis for home use.

Jim Sgrignoli donated an AFX chassis with poly mags, one of his custom wound quad lam arms, and 4 dot traction
mags, topped off with a Tyco arm and braided pickups. Hiram ran the coolest tjet, with bottom vented chassis
exposing AFX poly mags which also acted as traction mags, a Dan Cardinale arm and 4 - yes 4 - pickup springs,
and silver brushes. Darned thing screamed. Derek Sheaffer ran a Gumps' Runner and the NJ boys, Don and Vic
ran Magnatractions with poly mags which held their own.

This class was well received and with the tjets on steroids, great high speed wrecks and three burned out chassis,
everyone had a blast and there were laughs all around.!!!!

I want to thank our sponsors again, for without them our hobby would not be, and certainly in our corner of the world,
this race would have not have been what it was:

August 14 & 15, 2010
ECHORR 5th Anniversary Race

The racers started coming in around 8 AM and quickly the Randolph Racing Complex filled up with
ECHORR members from all over the North East. We had some new comers, including Dave Vickers
of VRP SlotRacing and Pete Barclay, yes the magnet car racer! Everyone exchanged pleasantries and
anticipated the draw of the random team race. We picked out captains and co- captains and then
seeded six teams to compete on three tracks. After the team selections, they were off to the tracks
to get their 10 cars ready that would run on all the tracks before they had to be impounded.

Sponsor prizes were handed out all day. Some special prizes were won by Chuck Shaeffer
(A DBL controller with a blue sparkle handle) and Randy Haydt (a KC-Jet).

While the teams had open practice, we held an IROC for our juniors 13 and under. This is always a fun
part of the festivities and it is great to see the youth still participating in slot car racing. It turned out to
be some very close racing among the 5 participants. When the dust settled, Kid Racer took the checkered
flag first just edging out Larry by less than one-half a lap!

Kids IROC results:

Kid Racer – 50.5 laps
Larry – 50 Laps
Cricket – 49 Laps
Lauren – 46 Laps
Lea – 43 laps

All the juniors received well-deserved trophies for their efforts.

Fun and exciting close racing with random teams, does not get much better than that for a fun afternoon!
We did find out about a new tuning trick used by the 1962 Aurora Ford Nationals Champ, Henry Harnish.
It seems that to get a good handling car in a team race you must hand select an arm that ohms out at 50,
27, 25….that’s right and it didn’t even get hot! That is why he is the Champ!!

After a day of intense, racing about 20 of us went over to Rosie’s Restaurant, a great Italian venue in the
neighborhood. This place has excellent cuisine and awesome bar! We relived the day and many other races
and shared some laughs at each other’s expense; this is truly, what this event is about!

Sunday morning came quickly and many of met at the Randolph Diner for breakfast before heading back
for another fun day of racing. The flavor of the day was Nostalgia cars on the Tub Track. Henry’s Tub track
is probably the best and smoothest lock and joiner Tub track in existence today.  We had open practice till
the NY style pizza was delivered for lunch, man is that pizza good!

We ran 2-minute qualifiers and seeded the bump up mains, with the top four qualifiers seeded in the A Main
and two spots left for the move ups.

First I would like to thank Henry Harnish for letting us use his great place for the event, this is a first
class race center run by a first class person! A special thanks to Joe Rinn for helping set up the races
and running the Sunday event at the expense of not racing. Thanks to Derek Shaeffer for helping with
tech and clean up. Thanks to all for tiding up the place and helping, make this a special event. But most
of all thanks to our sponsors this year:

BRP Racing Products
Identity tires
DBL Racing Controllers (all in the A Main of the Nostalgia Race were using them!)
NJ Nostalgia Hobby

August 13, 2010

Sixteen racers from four different states packed into NJ Nostalgia Hobby last night to participate in the 5th running
of the JJ Jernstrom Memorial race. This race is held yearly to honor the memory of JJ Jernstrom, a slot car racer and
enthusiast, whose heart and generosity to all in the slot car hobby was as big as he was, and JJ was a big, big man.
On hand were two previous winners of the JJ race, 2006 winner Dennis ‘Captain Pitstop’ Moore and Kevin ‘Dr Evil’ Price.
This 5th running of the race would see the first repeat winner, but more on that later.

The race was run as an ECHORRS Super Stock class race with 10 lap marshaled heats, preliminaries and one of the closest
finals in recent memory.   The top three finishers in the final were separated by one point with the top two finishers tied.
The win went to the racer with the most first place heat finishes. Here are the results:
First heat
Kevin “Dr Evil’ Price 63
Hiram Durant 61
Mike Pisano 57
Derek Shaeffer 49
John Gero 34
Brian Corea 30
Dave Vickers 30
Butch Beyer 12

Second heat
Dave Lockwood 56
Don Auriema 53
Joerinn 53
Dennis ‘Captain Pitstop” Moore 52
Victor Quinones 45
Derek Wright 31
Mario ‘The Chief’ Pisano 26
Scott ‘Kid Racer’ Beyer 20
There was little room for mistakes in the final as all of the cars tended to travel as a pack around the pristine
TKO high speed road course, with one error putting any racer out of the running in any given heat. There was no
making up lost time if your car deslotted as the pack was running that fast.
Finals:
Kevin ‘Dr Evil’ Price 50 (first on most heat wins)
Mike Pisano 50
Dave ‘The Connecticut Kid’ Lockwood 49
Hiram Durant 44
Don Auriema 40
Joerinn 19
So this running of the JJ Jernstrom Memorial saw Kevin ‘Dr Evil’ Price as the first repeat winner. Please check out
the pictures of the group and their cars, though you will find the cars’ pic somewhat unusual.   None of the racers
wanted their cars to be kept on their tires while in impound after tech so the picture is of the bottoms of all of the cars!

1st Annual MEAT in the Middle

This was the Mid West’s first national T-jet event and what an event it was!  Racers from 13 states gathered to run a G-Jet IROC, a random
Team race and two individual events, an ECHORR SS race and the new popular ECHORR INDY cars.  Great weekend of racing, sharing and
making new friendships…truly what this hobby is all about.

The results have been published so I will not go over them again.  I just want to thank everyone involved in this event.  First Duane Little,
the manager of the store for his 24/7 efforts to get everything ready before and after the event.  To John Habernal who gave up racing and
practice to cook for the entire field.  Tim Leppert who literally bolied outside on Saturday cooking and making sure everyone had plenty to eat.
To Tim’s wonderful daughters for helping out with miscellaneous items all weekend.

I want to thank the MAHOR Club for making all the ECHORR guys from the East Coast feel right at home.

Also a big thanks to our sponsors:

First Race at Crosley Raceway -06/27/10

When I first went to Jeff's to look at his new track, I fell in love with the layout. I told Paul
Kniffen that he had to go there and check it out; he did and was also hooked on it. On Sunday
June 27th Jeff held his first race on "The Equalizer" and what a first race it was. 20 racers showed
up and all had nothing but positive things to say about the venue and the race. Special thanks to
Jeff and his family for having us there on Saturday for practice and Sunday for the race. Jeff wants
to thank all that helped him prep for the race and to those that helped run the show on Sunday.
Special thanks to Chuck Shaeffer for providing the IROC cars, Joe Rinn and Derek Shaeffer for
running the computer and the Crosley girls for bringing all the goodies down to the basement.
We ran ECHORR SS cars on the Equalizer and an X-Traction IROC with Dash Camaro bodies on
the Max course.

NJ Nostalgia Hobby’s ECHORR Classic

Hi Guys, After five weeks of ECHORR Classic racing on Sundays in May, the final positions came
down to the last week of racing. With thirteen different racers participating in the five week series
only four scores counted toward your final tally. This allowed racers to miss a week and still be
competitive or simply to drop their lowest weekly score. Some racers participated in fewer than
four races and were still competitive as they finished at or near the top on the weeks they raced.
Others only raced one or two weeks and did not have high totals. After the dust settled the order
of finish and points were tallied here are the results: (numbers in parenthesis are number of
weeks counted)

Vic Quinones 16 points (3)
Donny Auriema 15 points (2)
Dave Schiapa 13 points (3)
Butch Beyer 11 points (4)
Kid Racer 11 points (4)
The Chief 10 points (2)
Derek Wright 9 points (2)
Mike Pisano 6 points (2)
Captain Pitstop 6 points (1)
Joe Rinn 5 points (1)
Joe Corea 3 points (1)

ECHORR Race at the Parsippany Slot Car Show – 05/16/10

Who says you can't have slot car collectors and slot car racers co-exist at the same venue? Well
whoever said that is wrong! We had 32 racers show up to the Parsippany Slot car show and all the
collectors and racers had a blast, some collector's racing…and many racers buying!!

This is our third race at this event and each one gets a bigger turnout. The track was set up at
7:30 AM and we ran open practice till @ 10: 15 AM. We ran two minute heats on each lane to
determine who would get the most laps for the race. There were some great cars and drivers
in the field, the likes of Henry Harnish (The legend), Dave Lockwood (Mr. DBL Controller) and
Paul Kniffen (ZoominMotorsports).

After the dust settled (pun intended), here are the results:

Note the difference between third place and fourth place was @ ¼ inch! Good close racing a
nd plenty of laughs all morning.

This type of dual venture seems to be taking off as TKO will have a show at their event this
coming weekend and Bob Beers and several other promoters at the show approached me about
having ECHORR races at their shows…awesome!

April 30, 2010

Good Evening Race Fans,
Fourteen racers turned out participate in NJ Nostalgia Hobby’s Jersey
Rumble, running ECHORR Super Stock rules. A light turn out for this popular
event. For some reason quite a few of the big names didn’t make it,, as the
only out of state racer was Dr. Evil. Of course you all know Hiram was no
where to be seen as it was 75 degrees and sunny in New Jersey today. But we
did have a special guest appearance by a former big name at NJH, Eric
Christiansen.
As always, there was some close racing and HEAVY door banging. Mike Jiran
jumped a lane and before the marshals could get it off it was pegged into
the wall with so much force everything in front of the screw post came off
in one piece. Too bad there were no photographers tonight.
We ran two 10 lap marshaled heats in each lane. The top three in each heat
qualified for the finals.
First Heat Results
Dr. Evil (red Zoomin Mustang) – 64
Don (neon green Zoomin Nissan 350Z) – 64
Derek (black Zoomin Bugatti) – 46
Vic (orange Zoomin Lotus) – 43
Jeff (white Zoomin Challenger) – 35
Kid Racer (green Zomin Corvette) – 23
Rob Sr. (red Moonstone Aston Martin) – 19
Second Heat Results
Eric (lavender Zoomin Bugatti) – 62
Mike J (orange Zoomin Nissan GTR) – 57
Ray (silver FRP BMW) – 45
PitStop (orange Zoomin Scion) – 43
Joerinn (green FRP Celica) – 36
Butch (yellow Zoomin Mercedes) – 32

April 25, 2010

I would like to thank all the racers for their support of the first ECHORR race event held
at Randy's Raceway in Kutztown, PA on Sunday April 25, 2010. A strong field of twenty
racers attended the event and everyone had a fun day of racing, car building, laughs,
and eating food.
The top two drivers from the Boneshaker came to Kutztown and shook up the racing
on the Green Tub. Super Stocks had some fast paced racing action with Paul Kniffen
from New York taking first. Paul showed everyone the way to get the most laps around
the track for an eight lap lead win, congratulations Paul. Hiram Durant MD took second
place just finishing one lap ahead of Chuck Scheaffer PA in third. Don Auriema NJ finished
fourth who is running very well was only four laps behind Chuck and one lap ahead of Henry
Harnish NJ who placed fifth.
On the 8 – lane oval, which had the Indy Cars winding out on the long straights, was one of
the wildest races ever ! The turn marshals had their hands full a few times with the eight Indy
Cars racing around the track. We also learned that Indy Cars can fly through the air but the
landing is very tough on them.
Congratulations goes to Henry Harnish from New Jersey for taking the Indy Car win with a
five-lap lead over Don Auriema NJ. Don finishing in second place continues to show he is a
top five contender. In third was Hiram Durant MD only one lap behind Don and four laps in
front of Paul Kniffen NJ in forth place. Dave (stick the landing) Simms finished in the fifth spot.
I must say it was a pleasure to host the race for everyone who attended, great racing !

Thank you,
Randy

April 17,2010

The Boneshaker 2010 race weekend was truly a wonderful event.  What a privilege it was
to have this number of T-jet enthusiasts travel to Western Pennsylvania to join us for the
weekend.

Forty-one racers competed representing eleven states including Maine and New England,
New York and New Jersey, Maryland and the Carolinas, Texas, Middle America and California,
Ohio and Pennsylvania – and those attending were among the finest T-jet builders and racers
in the nation.

The opportunity to learn many things about the T-jet slot car and T-jet racing was all there,
from direct one-on-one discussions and demonstrations to careful observation of the scene.
It was a pleasure to soak it all in.

Five vendors set-up shop with everything the T-jet racer would need in terms of parts, tools
and racing bodies.  Twenty-one sponsors provided an excellent array of race prizes that was
much appreciated by everyone attending.

A special thank you to Mark Frazin, Bridget and Mark’s family for hosting the group at their
home and for all the great food and beverages made available for two straight days.  To open
one’s home to over 40 slot car racers, including more than a few overnight guests, for an event
spanning several days is truly remarkable and a mother load of work.  Mark – everyone cannot
thank you enough for your hospitality.

The race event featured super stock T-jets (Fray and VHORS rules) in a So Cal inspirited ‘Fray Prep’
style format.  Thirty second qualifying runs seeded a timed heats round robin race which in turn
seeded sprint ladder mains with move-ups.

The A-Main to determine the overall podium finishers was once again a fantastic and competitive race.
It remained close throughout the six heats and all six racers were often on the same lap.  Congratulations
to Paul Kniffen of Cortland, NY for the overall win.  Hiram Durant of Westminster, MD took the second step
on the podium and our own Mark Frazin third.

A sincere thank you to everyone who made the Boneshaker 2010 an outstanding slot car race weekend!
